Inspired by Chen Yi’s “Tang Poems”.
Four Short Movements for Solo Clarinet was written in appreciations of Chen Yi’s visit to Bradley University for the performance of her Tang Poems Cantata. I wrote this piece not to sound like the Tang Poems but to show the impression they have had on me. Only in a few select moments can the listener who is very familiar with the Tang Poems identify a fragment of material that is from the original work. Pitch material was used as a starting point to create new melodic material to represent the original poetry.
